The Embodied Enneagram
April 12-13, 2008
Berkeley, CA
A weekend workshop integrating the body, breath, emotion and personality type with Peter O'Hanrahan and Marion Gilbert
The Enneagram system shows us how personality and character structure are based in three centers, or three parts of who we are - mind, heart, and body. All aspects of our lives, including our relationships, our inner work, and our daily experience of ourselves reflect this holistic reality. However, in our modern culture, the rational mind is center stage - work with feelings and body awareness is often neglected.
The Embodied Enneagram Workshop provides an opportunity to go deeply into work with three centers - body, mind, and heart - by combining mindfulness with a somatic or body-based approach to healing and relationship. We will use the breath to develop sensory awareness, to relax and open the body, to discover resistance, and to engage feelings, thoughts and belief systems. Through presentation, discussion and experiential work, we will explore personality type in all three centers - mental, emotional, and instinctual - and discuss approaches to healing, trauma resolution and personal development.
Topics include:
- Psychological, emotional and somatic defenses for each personality type
- The influence of body type and innate temperament
- Wilhelm Reich's seven segments of body armor
- The importance of internal and external "holding environments"
- Enneagram-based guidelines and methods for healing
You will learn:
- Self-help techniques for working with the body, the breath, and the emotions
- How to combine mindfulness practice with somatic presence
- Effective ways to work with your own character structure and defenses
- How the Enneagram and somatic work combined can support your relationships and your personal/professional practice
Who will benefit:
- Students and teachers of the Enneagram who will expand their knowledge of the nine personality types, deepen their personal work and learn body-based practices for healing and growth
- Therapists and health professionals who will apply the Enneagram system to empower their work with clients. Understanding the nine type structures will enable you to effectively tailor your approach to the individual, support integration and learn new healing methodologies.
Experiential exercises will include:
- Simple breathing and stretching exercises to contact somatic awareness
- Shoulder and neck massage
- Experiencing the types and the subtypes through sensory awareness and movement
- Guided breathing sessions
Note: Because some of the exercises will involve lying down on the floor, please bring a foam mat or equivalent, a pillow and a small towel. (We will have some extra.)
Cost: $225
Date & Time: Saturday & Sunday, April 12-13, 10 am - 6 pm both days
Location: Studio 12, 2525 8th St., Berkeley (corner of Dwight)
