This Enneagram panel series in the Narrative Tradition focuses on panelists speaking about three basic survival behaviors, referred to in the Enneagram as the instinctual subtypes: the self-preservation subtype, the social or group subtype, and the one-to-one or sexual subtype. Because these survival instincts or drives are part of the body-based intelligence in the gut or belly – biological imperatives so to speak - each Enneagram personality type includes all three.

Instinctual Enneagram subtypes are in part specific expressions of type through the basic survival instincts and the associated driving emotional energy (passion) of the types. Subtypes are important parts of personality, offering a deeper understanding of yourself within your type.

The use of the word “subtypes” derives from the nine Enneagram types, meaning that instinctual subtypes are in part specific expressions of type through the basic survival instincts and the associated driving emotional energy (passion) of the types. They are not variants, which mean deviations or slight differences from a norm, but important parts of personality offering a deeper understanding of yourself within your type.
