The Enneagram Instinctual Subtypes –
27 Paths in Life

March 15, 2008
Grass Valley, CA

A one-day workshop with Peter O'Hanrahan

The Enneagram is a powerful system for learning about ourselves and the people in our lives. It describes the point of view and the motivations of nine personality types and provides important strategies for our personal and professional growth. Currently the Enneagram is used around the world by people in the fields of psychology, education, and business development.

The study of the instinctual subtypes provides further insights about how we can apply the Enneagram for self awareness in daily life and improve our relationships at home and at work.

As a holistic system, the Enneagram describes three centers of energy and intelligence. The mental center holds our point of view and habit of attention, the emotional center is the home of our feelings and empathy, while the body center contains three major instincts. These are:

• The Self preservation instinct, which has to do with home, security, family and warmth

• The One-to-One instinct, which fuels our intimate relationships, sexuality and personal vitality

• The Social instinct, which governs our friendships and our participation in groups and the community

According to the Enneagram, each of the nine personality types has three important variations or subtypes, depending on which of these three instincts is more important in our lives. Our subtype describes both our character structure in the “inner world” and a our path of activity in the “outer world.” Understanding subtypes enables us to live healthier and more balanced lives, to make more personal choices with awareness, and to understand the important subtype differences in relationships.

In this Narrative Tradition panel workshop, we will hear from the nine personality types, and the 27 subtypes, how these powerful forces capture our attention in daily life and shape our major projects and relationships. Each participant will be encouraged to sit on the panel of their type, to be interviewed by Peter O’Hanrahan, and share their story in a supportive community. The format will consist mainly of panel interviews, with several lectures and small group exercises.
