Enneagram Subtypes – 27 Paths in Life

A weekend workshop with Peter O'Hanrahan

April 28-29, 2007
Minneapolis, MN

According to the Enneagram system, there are three powerful biological forces – self preservation, social membership, and sexuality in many forms - which combine with the nine personality types to create 27 variations. Each of us has all three instincts, but the one that is most central creates a particular style and focus of attention – our subtype.

These 27 profiles hold the key to understanding our path in life and our role in the human community. How do we spend our time and energy in daily life? What is our primary project? Who are the people who are most important to us? How are we invested in home, neighborhood, politics or religious activities? How do we express ourselves physically and emotionally?

At the intersection of archetype and biology, the study of subtypes gives us an excellent way to examine our behavior and activities. With this view we can work with our type structure and know when the passion of our type is running the show. We can bring discernment to our choices and decisions, and discover what is an automatic pattern and what is an authentic expression of who we are. And we can better understand the challenges and potentials in our significant relationships. Many people have found that subtype differences can be more crucial than personality type issues!

Along with the personality types, subtypes help us celebrate human diversity and appreciate each person's journey. In the Narrative Tradition, we will hear from panels and small groups in a way that builds conscious community.

We'll discuss:

  • The potentials and the pitfalls for all 27 subtypes
  • Relationship issues between the subtypes – conflict and cooperation
  • Using our subtype awareness to "wake up" and make clearer choices about how we spend our time and energy
  • Working with each of the three instincts to create balance and health
  • How to include the body and the emotions in our self-development work

The format includes presentation and discussion, small groups, subtype panels, and some simple stretching and breathing exercises. Handouts will be provided.
