THE PANEL SERIES
ON ENNEAGRAM SUBTYPES
The Fall 2006 panel series will focus on the instinctual subtypes, a powerful application of the Enneagram to our relationships and our spiritual development. Beginners and long-time students are welcome.  However, some familiarity with the nine personality types is recommended.

WHAT ARE INSTINCTUAL SUBTYPES?

Each person has three centers of intelligence – mental, emotional and instinctual (body). In the body center we have three biological drives:

• Self-preservation instinct, which guides our relationship with home, family, security

• Social instinct, which shapes our participation and role in groups

• One-to-one instinct, which governs our primary relationships

Our subtype is determined by which one of these instincts is most important or central to us.

The Nine Enneagram Types and the Instinctual Subtypes
Weekly Panel Series with Helen Palmer, Sharon Berbower, Peter O’Hanrahan and panels of the Nine Types
Berkeley, September 17 – November 19
Eight Sunday evenings, 7-9 pm, plus one afternoon, 4-6 pm on November 19
(No class held on October 15 or November 5)

The Enneagram describes nine personality types and their patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. It is a valuable tool for psychologists, business people, religious clergy, teachers and parents in many countries around the world. The system enables us to develop greater self awareness, manage our reactivity, and increase our compassion toward ourselves and others. It also provides an effective way to integrate psychology and spirituality.

In the Narrative Tradition, the Enneagram is taught via interviews with people who know their type plus brief lectures and inner awareness practices.

In this panel series on Enneagram subtypes, you will learn how to:
• Identify your path in life and make more informed choices about your investments in people and projects
• Understand your patterns in relationship and get along better with people of different subtypes
• Develop a healthier lifestyle by consciously working with all three instinctual drives
• Direct your energy and attention to inner work and spiritual development

Relationship and the Practice of Presence
October 11 – November 15, 2006
Berkeley
A six-week Enneagram group for couples (and singles) led by Sharon Berbower and Gary Rosenthal

You know each other's type, now what? Recognizing the often-fixated nature of the personality is not enough to become free of it. The Enneagram needs to be wedded to what the sacred traditions call "skillful means." And nowhere is this more apparent than in our closest relationships. This group offers its participants orientation, guidance and support to begin to extricate themselves from the characteristic patterning that each Enneagram type encounters in relationship. Bring your husband, girlfriend or business partner - or simply yourself if you are un-partnered and desire a relationship. Also bring your curiosity, sense of humor, and a willingness to explore the opportunities for self-awareness that are available in your relationships.

Six consecutive Wednesdays, 7-9:30 pm, beginning October 11, 2006
First Congregational Church in Berkeley, or at an East Bay location TBA.
Cost for series: $270 per person

Seasoned therapists and group leaders Sharon Berbower, MFT and Gary Rosenthal, MFT together bring more than a half century of Enneagram experience. During that time they have learned unique ways to employ the Enneagram in facilitating inner development.

Call Sharon at 510-525-8814 or Gary at 510-232-8701 to reserve a place.

The Embodied Enneagram Retreat
October 20-22, 2006
Nevada City
with Peter O’Hanrahan and Marion Gilbert

This retreat emphasizes working with Enneagram type and character structure from a holistic view, and how to combine mindfulness with embodied presence. We will discuss the mental, emotional and body-based patterns of the nine types as well as methods of healing, trauma resolution and personal growth.

Topics include psychological and somatic defenses, the influence of body type, Reich’s segments of body armor, and the importance of support and inner resources. We will use bodywork and breathwork sessions to increase sensory awareness, open the body and feelings, uncover resistance, and support the healing journey. Each participant will have the opportunity to experience these exercises at his or her own pace with skilled facilitation.

Location: Private home/healing center in a beautiful Sierra foothills setting. Meals are included. Lodging is indoor/outdoor camping on site (included) or at nearby motels (for an additional fee).

Cost: $325/person by October 1; $375 after October 1. Group size: limited to 22 people. Schedule: 1 pm Friday through 5 pm Sunday, with morning, afternoon and evening sessions.
