What if the challenges of our Enneagram type can be used as a path into our true nature? What if they really are an invitation to awaken to our depths?
This is the miraculous dance of the passions (aka, the vices) and the virtues. They are both expressions of the life force that animates us. While we tend to elevate the virtue, and disparage the passion, they are in fact partners and allies in our evolution.
In this class, we will explore and practice what Helen Palmer calls the “vice to virtue conversion. The vices or passions (anger, pride, deceit, envy, avarice, fear, gluttony, lust, sloth) are the emotional expression of our type structures. We can think of the passion of the type as an actual vise: an emotional contraction that is trying to hold things together. From this perspective, the passion or vice is the life force contracted upon and channeled in service of the adaptive structure of the type, which is a necessary aspect of our human development and serves us for a time.
The virtue is free-flowing life force, with the qualities of well-being and love and expressing the virtues or each Enneagram type (serenity, humility, honesty, equanimity, non-attachment, courage, constancy, innocence, right action.) The vice to virtue conversion can be seen as leaning into our contraction, going receptive, allowing it to naturally convert or transform into the free-flowing energy of the life force, the virtue. We move from contraction, the vice, to expansion, the virtue. It is the pulse of our growth and awakening.
This class is presented in the Narrative Tradition, which brings the Enneagram to life through interview and inquiry of the nine Enneagram types. Included with panel inquiry are didactic and somatic awareness practices, and group discussion, which supports learning through mind, heart and body.
